Axson Acquires Nanoledge

Nanoledge owned by Telesystem have just sold its high performance resin business to Axson, a high performance polymer formulator.

Nanoledge is a startup company focused on the high end epoxy market, The company has improved composite material performance through its proprietary nanoblending technologies. Nanoblending combines base resins with a variety of nano particles like carbon nanotubes and selected chemical additives in order to target specific mechanical, electrical or thermal performance improvements while maintaining compatibility with the end clients’ manufacturing processes.

Nanoledge uses its patented Nano IN technology to produce high-performance composites. Carbon nanotubes have unique mechanical and electric properties but their incorporation into polymer materials is extremely challenging. This is due to a lack of wetting of the CNT sidewalls by the host matrix. Like adhesives, NANO IN additives create physical intermolecular interactions between the CNTs and the host polymer (dipole-dipole interactions and/or charge transfer). Thus, Nano IN additives provide a homogeneous dispersion of carbon nanotubes and their compatibility with the host polymer.

The technology is protected by one European patent application. The patent claims the CNTs dispersion method, the physically functionalised CNTs and resulting materials from the incorporation of such nanotubes. However, most of the process elements cannot be protected by patents, thus Nanoledge relies on trade secrets and keeps strategic information confidential.

According to David Bernardi, CTO of Telesystem and member of the board of Nanoledge,

Nanoledge developed a technological platform that allowed it to demonstrate composite material performances that many in the industry simply did not believe possible, all at only marginally higher costs. In the hands of AXSON, this technology platform will now be made to benefit more clients in more fields of use.
