The announcement was made at a press conference organised by the area’s marine trade Association which focused on growing Rhode Island’s marine and composites industry with Rhode Island dignitaries speaking at the event in support of the new statewide initiative.

The area’s boat building industry was an early adopter of composite materials, currently there are over 70 companies in the area involved in many different aspects of composite manufacture. The state also boasts a high concentration of composite expertise, along with strong education and training facilities, mould making capacity.

Governor Gina Raimondo emphasised the importance of rebuilding the state’s middle class and creating tens of thousands of family supporting jobs:

We are going to create good jobs by focusing on industries where Rhode Island can be a leader, such as the marine and composites industry.

The states Composites Alliance was created back in May, last year and currently has around 50 members, which include both composite companies and national stakeholders. The funding will allow RICA to begin their industry and workforce development initiatives.
