Flynano Gets First Airborne Test Flight

We posted about the FlyNano way back in April, last year, this week the FlyNano flew it’s first electric prototype with a new battery-powered engine.

The Flynano is your personal mini seaplane, small and lightweight thanks to it’s use of carbon fibre composites you can fly this plane without a pilots licence and will cost under $34,000

FlyNano has promised a final design next year with a delivery date at the end of 2013.

  1. Ground effect flying is still considered flying. All it means is a little more power to the propeller and you will get out of ground effect (about the wingspan above the water). Innovative/great design here and congrats to the team!

  2. ground effect in action. this is NOT the plane in normal sence. and lack of video footage is dissapointing too

  3. don’t focus on high altitude so much. you only need 6ft to cross ocean. with solar panel and generator to keep batteries charged you achieve infinite range. even if the top speed is only 30mph. think low and slow

  4. It obviously flew for more than two seconds, so why the lack of footage. Looks like it could be a great aircraft, but no footage of it flying, just flashes. It’s not the plane that’s diddapointing, it’s the photography that’s dissapointing.

  6. its on a lake, so i presume there’s no much space for big flights! still a prototype, and i do believe that they will do further testing in the sea! 😉

  7. We’re expecting it to be “amazing” like the designers said it was. Another company that can’t keep their mouths shut and let the airplane do the talking. They had to promote it like it was some huge breakthrough. When it actually is amazing, call it amazing.

  9. I think it’s a great achievement, and the only good thing about this video is that it does actually show it flying. But the very limited footage makes it dubious. Is it real? Show me 10 seconds of footage (instead of one second) and I might believe it. I pushed dislike on this video because the footage is so pathetic. I was hoping to see some entertaining flying. And how hard is it to do a shoot on a flying aircraft? Disappointed!

  11. This is the bad thing about the internet you cannot make anyone happy lol.A good sign that you are doing something innovative is when everyone is belittling your accomplishment and saying how stupid of a idea it is… lol

  13. I never thought i’d see the day that thing ever got off the ground or “water”.Color me effin suprised. I know its just a test but that thing didnt look like it would even leave the water. I was wrong.

  15. A first testflight usualy just means getting airborne, then landing imidiately again. this is done to see if it’s capable of taking off. If everything looks normal, then they can proceed with longer flights.

  17. Is it even controllable after leaving ground effect? we will soon see i hope…. MORE VIDS! NOW!

  18. so why didn’t they show that? … cause it’s can’t reach those altitudes yet, probably only in theory so far.

  20. Ppl are so dumb. Yes the video sucked and they should have done longer vids but that doesnt mean the “flying boat” sucks. and jsyk it can reach altitudes of 10,000 feet so everyone saying they fade out because it only hops up for a couple of seconds obviously dont know what they are talking about.

  22. Work on further development? How about hiring a new marketing team because this video will be the end of you.It isn’t hard to record a video more than 5 seconds long instead of pulling together a bunch of 5 second videos. Show us what it does after those seconds and we’ll have something to talk about.

  23. Been following this project with a lot of scepticism but you’ve proven me wrong… almost… though I must say I’m a bit dissapointed of the short video I’ve been waiting for so long!

  24. Is it lifting thanks to wing-in-ground effect? Anyway, very nice to see.. But they should also offer an alternative, slower, low power plane with large wing span. Like the one that was bicycled across the english channel. with 1 kW engine, and low weight thin flexible solar panels. That is an easier challenge than this plane, I think.

  29. Ah. After looking at the video again, I see the reason. They gave it a negative dihedral so they could stick little floats on the wings. Sacrificing flight stability for ground stability.Yeah, that’s a good tradeoff. Not.

  30. Meh. Putting the prop directly in front of your face is far from the safest configuration. Even with goggles. For more than one reason. This part may not be a valid criticism of the actual engineering, but the thing LOOKS like it was designed in somebody’s garage after more than a few beers. And what’s with the negative dihedral? That better have good justification.

  31. So far it seems to me that it’s really using the ground effect. However it seems like an insanely fun project keep on working 😀

  32. Well let’s see somethng that is more than a hop up for a few seconds and then a clever fade out just at the moment it starts down a few yards later.
